How Much Does It Cost to Paint a House in Calgary? What Actually Drives the Quote
October 1, 2026 · 8 min read · Vive Green Painting

If you have searched for the cost to paint a house in Calgary, you have probably noticed that most pages dodge the question or quote a range so wide it means nothing. There is a reason. Painting is priced by the job, and two houses that look identical from the street can need very different amounts of work.
We are not going to quote you a number in a blog post, because it would not be honest. What we can do is show you exactly what drives a painting quote up or down, so you can compare estimates properly and know what to expect when you ask for one.
The short answer
The cost of painting a house comes down to three things: how much surface there is, what condition it is in, and how much preparation it needs before any paint goes on. Paint itself is usually the smaller part of the job. Time, skill and prep are the bigger part.
The fastest way to a real figure is a photo. Send us a few pictures of the room or the outside of the house, and we can usually tell you a lot from that alone. It is free, there is no obligation, and you do not need to be home for us to look.
What moves a painting quote
1. Size and number of surfaces
More wall area takes more time. But it is not only square footage. Ceiling height matters, because a room with tall ceilings or a stairwell needs ladders, scaffolding or extra setup. The number of windows and doors matters too, because every one of them is edging and masking work. A smaller room with lots of trim can take longer than a large plain room.
2. Condition of the existing surface
Calgary's dry air is hard on houses. In winter, indoor humidity drops and drywall moves, which shows up as hairline cracks and nail pops. Outside, strong sun at our altitude, hail and freeze-thaw cycles break down paint films and open up cracks in siding and trim. Peeling, chalking, stains and old damage all have to be dealt with before painting. Good prep is what makes the finish last, so a surface that needs more repair needs more time.
3. Interior or exterior
Exterior work depends on weather, access and a lot more masking. Siding, soffits, fascia, trim and garage doors all need different handling. Interior work is more controlled but usually involves more rooms, more furniture protection and more detail work around trim and fixtures.
4. Colour changes and coats
Going from a dark colour to a light one, or the other way around, usually needs a primer coat and sometimes an extra finish coat. Staying in a similar colour is simpler. Strong colours, such as a deep feature wall, often need extra coats to look even. If you are thinking about a bold wall, read our guide to feature walls first.
5. Trim, doors and ceilings
Baseboards, casings, doors and ceilings are often separate from the wall painting in a quote. Doors in particular take a lot of care to get a smooth finish. If you want them included, say so up front. We handle ceiling painting and door painting as their own services, and they can be added to any job.
6. Access and timing
A two-storey house with a steep roof line or a deck close to the siding takes more setup than a bungalow with open access. Timing matters as well. Exterior painting is limited to the warmer months, so the busy season fills up. Booking earlier gives you more choice of dates.

Quick reference: what makes a job bigger or smaller
| Factor | Tends to make the job simpler | Tends to make the job bigger |
|---|---|---|
| Surface condition | Smooth, clean, recently painted | Peeling, cracked, stained or chalking |
| Colour change | Similar tone to what is there | Dark to light, or bold feature colours |
| Height and access | Standard ceilings, easy ladder access | Tall ceilings, stairwells, multi-storey exteriors |
| Trim and detail | Plain walls, few windows | Lots of trim, panelling, many windows and doors |
| Furniture and contents | Empty or easy to move | Full rooms that need moving and covering |
| Season | Booked early in the painting season | Last-minute in the busy months |
Why the cheapest quote is not always the cheapest job
When two quotes are far apart, the difference is almost always in the prep, the number of coats or the products. A quote that skips scraping, patching, sanding and priming will look good on paper. It will also start to show problems sooner, and then you pay again. Ask what is included. Ask how surfaces will be prepared. Ask what is masked and protected.
Our approach is simple: proper prep from start to end. We mask windows, doors and eaves, protect floors and furniture, repair what needs repairing, and leave the space clean. We are insured and WCB-covered, which is worth confirming with any painter you hire.
Questions to ask any painter before you hire
- What does your prep include, and what is masked or protected?
- How many coats are included, and is primer part of the quote?
- Which products will be used, and what sheen?
- Who will actually be painting, and how long will it take?
- Are you insured and covered by WCB?
- What happens if you find damage once the work starts?
- Is the estimate free, and is it in writing?
How to get a free estimate from a photo
This is the easiest way to get started, and it works because most of what we need to know is visible.
- 1Take a wide photo of each room or each side of the house, in good light.
- 2Take close-ups of any trouble spots, such as cracks, peeling, stains or water marks.
- 3Add a few notes: which rooms or surfaces, any colour ideas, and your timing.
- 4Send the photos through our contact page or call (403) 973-7929.
- 5We reply with a few questions, then give you a free estimate.
