What we paint

  • Cedar decks
  • Painted decks
  • Railings and spindles
  • Steps and stairs
  • Deck skirting and trim
  • Stain or paint, your choice

Prep comes first

  1. 1Look over the boards, rails and steps
  2. 2Clean and prep the surface so it can take the stain or paint
  3. 3Mask the house walls, posts and anything near the deck
  4. 4Protect plants and the ground below

Stain or paint

We do both. Stain soaks into the wood and lets the grain show. Paint sits on the surface and covers it. Which one is right depends on the deck: the wood, its age, its condition and the look you want. Send a photo and tell us what you are after. We will talk it through before any work starts, and tell you honestly what suits your deck.

Cedar is thirsty

Cedar drinks stain unevenly at first, then evens out as the coats go on. That is normal, and it is why a good deck job is built up with care instead of rushed. We stain in coats, and we take time on the details: rails, spindles, steps and the edges where boards meet. When it is finished, cleaned up and ready to use, it should look even all over.

A deck in Calgary weather

A Calgary deck faces strong sun at altitude, dry air, hail, snow and repeated freezing and thawing. That wears the surface down faster than people expect. A faded or patchy deck is a sign it is ready for attention. Send us a photo of your deck and we will look at the condition, ask any questions and give you a free estimate for staining or painting it.

Deck & Railing Staining: questions

How much does deck staining cost in Calgary?

It depends on the size of the deck, the condition of the wood, how much railing and how many steps there are, and whether it is being stained or painted. Send a photo for a free estimate.

Do you stain and paint railings?

Yes. Railings, spindles and steps are part of deck work, and we do them along with the deck boards.

Can you paint a deck instead of staining it?

Yes. We paint decks as well as stain them. Send a photo and we will talk through what suits yours.

Why does my cedar deck look patchy after the first coat?

Cedar absorbs stain unevenly at first. It evens out as the coats build up. A patchy first coat is normal.

Can I send a photo of my deck for an estimate?

Yes. A few clear photos of the deck, rails and steps are enough for us to start. We will ask any questions by phone or email.
